All
wood rails crack throughout their life. There is no treatment available
to prevent cracking. For painted rails, we fill cracks and hand sand. Wood
rails are crack filled, dried, sanded before applying primer. The total
painting process takes several hours.

no maintenance, choose POLYETHYLENE coated solid core rails
 
Polyethylene Coated Solid Core Wood Rails
We also supply polyethylene coated solid wood rails: 4" diameter
heavy weight, u-v protection. These rails last a long time. Coating is
actually bonded to surface of wood. Call for pricing and availability.
