About Sand
Sand is the foundation of every good footing, and is safer for the horse while boosting the horse’s confidence. There are an enormous variety of sand qualities available. But, not every sand is suitable for riding arenas. Sand well suited for an indoor riding arena might be completely unsuitable for an all-weather outdoor riding arena.
Sand impacts the condition of the surface. Saving money by choosing cheaper sand risks the overall value of the purchase. When installing a new arena surface, the right sand is the best investment.
If the surface is hard, the horse will:
- Shorten its stride to minimize jarring
- Modify jumping form to avoid the sting of landing
- Stress his joints
If the surface is too soft or slippery, the horse will:
- Strain soft tissues - tendons, ligaments, and muscles
- Feel insecure
- Move cautiously

Measuring What's Needed
Use the following guidelines to measure the amount of sand needed to fill an indoor arena:
- 10 tons per 1000 square feet
- Any sand:
- less than 1.7mm particle size
- 8% or less clay content
Recommended proportional mixture of GGT-Footing additive with the arena sand:
- 25 pounds per 100 square feet
Example of Materials Needed
72' x 140' indoor arena (10,080 sq.ft.)
- 100 tons of sand
- 2,520 pounds of GGT-Footing
Standard round pen with a 60' diameter (2,826 sq.ft.)
Arena Construction – FLL Guidelines Requirements
Ground:
Compaction level of the ground ≥ 97%Water permeability ≥ 8 l/m² and per hourSlope 0.8%-2%The ground water level has to be at least 20 inches below the arena sub-base.
Base:
Frost resistanceCompaction level of the base ≥ 97%Water permeability ≥ 1360 l/m² and per hourSlope (0.8%- 1.8%) Thickness ≥ 5½ inches
Separation Layer:
Filter-stable to ensure drainageThe surface of the separation layer has to adhere to the footing to avoid slipping. It has to stay in place when using harrows or other machinery to maintain the arena.

Arena Construction for GGT-Footing Arenas
A. Prepare the sub-base.
- Level the arena
- Install drainage (if required)
- Fill to required level
B. Install Base Layer (see FLL guidelines above).
C. Install Separation Layer (see FLL guidelines).
D. Lay the Footing.
- 2.5 to 3.25 inches of sand mixed with 0.25 pounds of GGT-Footing a square foot
- Sand granulation
- Fine - 0 to 0.5 mm
- Medium - 0.3 to 0.7 mm
E. Outdoor arenas are impacted by:
- Climate
- Frequency
- Type of use
- Maintenance
Notes
In dry weather climates, keep the outdoor arena moist.
Water an indoor arena regularly to minimize dust.
GGT-Footing reduces dust by storing the water and releasing it to the sand over time, helping avoid health issues such as bronchitis in horses and riders
